Nestled in the suburbs, hidden between private homes and a small shop selling sewing supplies, lies what’s officially made it to the top of my list of Cape Town secrets: Boston Coffee.
This snug little cafe not only has a range on its coffee menu that the snobbiest of coffee snobs would appreciate, but they serve breakfast, and a welcoming atmosphere, all day long.
The essentials:
where: Cleveland St, Boston, Cape Town, 7530
when: Monday – Saturday 8am-4pm

Given where Boston Coffee is situated, you wouldn’t expect to find such a little spot. It’s not in the bustling city, but out in the suburbs, hidden between public playgrounds and quiet suburban homes. It doesn’t announce itself with any fan fair – you’d almost already need to know where it is to find it – and yet, on busy days there’s a line waiting outside for a table. This unexpected gem has made a name for itself in the community, and has become the go-to place in the northern suburbs for those who crave a really good cup of coffee.
The atmosphere is extremely welcoming, and the staff make you feel at home from the second you enter the door. They need to, because anyone who isn’t a coffee connoisseur might be spooked by some of the selections on the menu otherwise ( what’s an aeropress?). For those who’re looking to learn more about the coffee they order, this is a great spot to pick up some nuggets (or beans) of knowledge. You can even watch them roast their beans in store – something I’ve never seen anywhere else!
And speaking of the menu, though the beverage section may seem a little baffling at first, the food menu hosts some of of everyones’ favourites – sandwiches, breakfasts, and pastries. It’s not especially vegan friendly, but some of the items can be adjusted. For those just looking for a quick bite, it even includes the humble “marmite toastie” ( a personal favourite).
If this is the first time you’re hearing about Boston Coffee, don’t feel bad. It’s taken me years to get around to visiting ( the first time I went, there was a line outside and I aborted that mission immediately). Now that I have, though, I’ll definitely be going back.
There’s nowhere else like it in the area, so if you’re out in the north and craving a decent cup o’ Joe – head out here and treat yourself.
Ugh. Just writing this has given me a coffee craving.
