With almost all of Tuesday’s votes accounted for in both Florida and Illinois, Joe Biden will be the winner for both states’ Democratic primary elections and nothing short of a miracle will be needed to keep Bernie Sanders’ campaign alive.

At the time of writing, with 99% reporting, Florida has been won by Biden with 61,9% of the vote and 130 out of 219 pledged delegates, while Sanders has won only 22,8% of the vote and 48 delegates. Meanwhile, in Illinois (97% reporting), Biden won 59,5% of the vote (93 out of 155 delegates) and Sanders won 36,1% of the votes (46 delegates). In Arizona, the other primary that took place on Tuesday, Biden is winning 42,7% of the votes to Sanders’ 30%, with 39% reporting.

As things stand, with 2,176 of the delegates declared (out of a total of 3,979), Biden has amassed a total of 1,147, while Sanders is stuck way behind on 861, a 286 delegate gap. A count of 1,991 is the total number of delegates required to seal the nomination.

Even the most optimistic Bernie Sanders supporters will now realise that it will take nothing less than a miracle for the Vermont Senator to come back from this.
