United States President Donald Trump has announced several travel restrictions that will be shutting down travel routes from 26 European countries.
Trump’s ban, which he described as “strong and necessary” will not include some European countries like the UK and is restricted to the Schengen border-free area.
“To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe,” Mr Trump said in a televised address from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening.
Trump also tweeted about his economic solution to the COVID-19 outbreak, which include tax cuts to provide relief to economic shocks. He also said that, while people will not be allowed to travel to the US from Europe, the exchange of goods will continue without disruption.
Trump’s announcement was made mere hours after Italy’s government announced strict restrictions on their citizens, which is effectively a nationwide lockdown. Italy is the worst affected country other than China, with 12,000 confirmed cases and 827 deaths.
With 1,135 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US, as well as 38 deaths, a fast, far-reaching and effective response to the escalation of the global pandemic will be critical for the third most populated nation on earth.
