Cape Town (Almost) Hot Spot: The Stone Kitchen

Cape Town (Almost) Hot Spot: The Stone Kitchen

It’s been a wild year! As we adjust to the new normal, we’re finally reintroducing out Cape Town Hot Spots and our (now quite dusty) travel section. While it’s important to support local businesses, we all still have to keep in mind that the pandemic rages on, and we need to do so safely. Going forward, our Hot Spots recommendations will also include everything you need to know about the COVID-19 protocols at the destinations we review. Safe travels, everyone!

While normally we cover hot spots in Cape Town itself, we’re kicking off our return to the hot spots list with The Stone Kitchen on Dunstone, in Wellington.

This family-friendly bistro is situated just outside the town of Wellington, about an hours drive outside of Cape Town. Its friendly, rural atmosphere makes one feel well at home, and it’s views of the surrounding mountains make for a great afternoon of wining and/or dining.

The Stone kitchen is a great spot to take the the entire family for a weekend outing. Situated out in the countryside, it has a peaceful and sleepy atmosphere that places in the city often lack. It boasts two play areas, one indoor and one outdoor, and they don’t even mind if you bring your dog along – provided its nicely behaved.

For days when the weather is good, grab a seat outside and admire the greenery that surrounds the bistro, while you enjoy their snack platters, or hearty burgers. The menu has something for everyone (although strict vegans may have to adjust the veggie burger or try an assortment of sides), and the service is friendly and efficient. The seemed more than willing to make adjustments, such as removing cheese.

Nowadays, few places are maintaining strict COVID-19 social distancing measures, but the Stone Kitchen has ample space to allows diners to feel safe and comfortable. Furthermore, unlike many places, the bistro still requires visitors to sign in, checks their temperatures, and brings your cutlery in plastic as an added hygiene measure.

If you’re looking to get out of the city and enjoy a day of wine tasting, a Sunday brunch or a family drive out towards the Boland, make sure to pop in at The Stone Kitchen for a bite to eat. Remember to take a walk around the Bistro during your visit to enjoy the surroundings, be sure to book if you’re going over the weekend, and remember, no mask, no entry!
