The Health Ministry has confirmed that South Africa recorded its highest ever tally for daily Covid-19 related deaths.

Yesterday, South Africa recorded 806 new deaths and 18,555 new Covid-19 cases, according to TimesLIVE. The previous record for deaths was set the day before, on 12 January, when 755 people died from the virus, meaning 1,561 people died from the virus in the past two days alone. The total number of deaths related to Covid-19 in South Africa has now reached 35,140, while cumulative cases stand at 1,278,303. In total, 1,030,930 recoveries have been recorded, at a recovery rate of 80.6%.

With 71,681 conducted yesterday, the positivity rate is now over 25%.

Meanwhile, the race for the vaccine continues, and the government has secured 20 million Covid-19 vaccines but will still need far more if they are to achieve herd immunity by immunising at least 40 million South Africans. President Ramaphosa and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize have both communicated their plans for the rollout strategy, which will see South Africa’s frontline healthcare workers prioritised in the first phase of vaccinations.

“In line with the president’s statement, we expect the processes will have delivered the vaccine by the beginning of the second quarter,” said  Mkhize, in an interview earlier this month.
