Singer Akon To Create Real-Life “Wakanda” In Senegal

In an effort to improve infrastructure and stability in underdeveloped region in Africa, singer-turned-businessman Akon is now officially the owner of his very own city in Senegal, which he’s dubbed Akon City. Unsurprisingly, the project has already been nicknamed the “real-life Wakanda”.

According to CNN, the “crypto city” will be built on 2000 acres of land, five minutes from the country’s new airport, and will trade exclusively with the singer’s own crypto-currency, Akoin. It is scheduled for construction over the next ten years.

According to Vice, Akon launched Akoin in 2018 (the same year in which he began discussing plans for Akon City), as a way to help developing countries in Africa, particularly those which struggle with inflation, or in which corruption at a government level has disrupted local currency.

“This coin is focused specifically on Africa,” Akon told Vice’s Justin Caffier at an event. “Businesses that could be utilized in Africa, the population that can be using it in Africa, and, more importantly than anything, the entrepreneurs that can be developed and honed in Africa.”

Could Akon create a real-life Wakanda in Senegal?

Akon signed the deal for Africa’s new “city of the future” with Senegal’s state-owned tourism company SAPCO on Tuesday. According to the Jakarta Post, a spokesperson from SAPCO said that the singer intends to build a sustainable tourism villiage, that will “campaign for the environment” as well.

While the entire project has been criticised for its lack of detail and Akon’s reluctance to discuss hard numbers when it comes to his crypto-currency, the former singer remains optimistic about his new city and on Monday, he tweeted “looking forward to hosting you there in the future”.
