The Hawks raided the offices of ANC Donor, Thulani Majola, on Tuesday, as part of an investigation into PPE corruption.
South Africa’s directorate for priority crime announced their search and seizure operation at LTE Consulting, which belongs to Thulani Majola – a top ANC donor. This forms part of a probe into contracts worth two-thirds of the roughly R15 billion state entities spent on procuring PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Hawks conducted a search and seizure operation in the Gauteng… offices of LTE Consulting in relation to an ongoing investigation into PPE procurement,” Hawks spokeswoman in the province Colonel Katlego Mogale said, according to IOL.
This latest move to curtail PPE corruption by the Hawks is part of a larger movement within recent months that has seen dozens of individuals, both private and public figures, placed under arrest for corruption in South Africa.
Earlier this year, the South African Police Service awarded LTE Consulting a R77 million contract to supply three million face masks to the police to prevent the spread of COVID-19. LTE was also involved in a failed R2.2 billion project to supply potable water to 55 villages in Giyani in Limpopo.
It has also been reported that the the Zondo commission probing state capture has been looking into a R200,000 payment linked to EFF leader Julius Malema – although this is reportedly not part of the Zondo Commission’s inquest into into the financial statements of Malema and his deputy, Floyd Shivambu.
Earlier, The Essential Millennial brought you the story of a similar probe into PPE corruption - specifically the awarding of a tender to the husband of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Khusela Diko.
