Get Your Beach Body Back On A Budget

So, you’ve tried on your (still relatively new) swim shorts or one-piece swim suit (because who wears bikinis anymore?) and you’ve found that it hugs you a little too tightly in most of the wrong places. Was it that snug last summer? Who knows. The point is, you ate too much at one too many Christmas parties, and now you need to get beach-ready again FAST.

The problem is that it’s the start of a new year, and all the money you saved in 2019 went to Christmas presents and wine tasting on your holidays. No worries, we’re here to help with this list of some of our favourite ways to work out and shape up without having to spend a cent.

Nike Run Club

A really helpful and motivating smartphone app for anyone who wants to start running. Use it to track your runs, or follow their guided runs if you’re lacking the motivation to go it alone. It tracks routes, calories, and number of runs, and boosts morale with achievements that can be unlocked, and challenges that can push you to your limits. It’s extremely user-friendly and can be turned into a social event if you have other friends with Nike Run Club profiles. You can even tell the app which running shoes you have, and it’ll tell you when they need to be “retired”. Conveniently, you can also buy new Nikes through the app, but that may defeat the “budget” aspect of this whole thing.

Nike Training Club

Like NRC, this fantastic app is perfect for those of us who want to get moving but don’t quite know where to start. It’s full of prepared workout plans for different fitness levels and different results. Whether you’re into getting sweaty with HIIT (high intensity interval training) or breathing deeply on the yoga mat (or both!) this app will guide you through workouts that require little or no equipment at all and are easy to do at home. They include guest coaches, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Ellie Goulding and Serena Williams, who remind you to keep breathing while you’re doing your hundredth sit-up, and each exercise is demonstrated by helpful videos. Some of the workouts are even as short as ten minutes, so there’s no excuse not to fit one in every day.

Zombies Run

This is another smartphone app for the aspiring runners, but this time it adds the extra motivational boost of being chased by brain-hungry zombies. This highly immersive game has an interesting storyline, and creepy zombie sound effects that really make you shift your butt into gear and get sprinting when they start getting closer. In between being chased by the hordes, you can listen to the music on your phone. If you don’t find cardio fun or exciting (and let’s be real, most of us don’t) this is the app for you.

This one, unfortunately, does require a paid membership to unlock all the chapters, but the first bunch of them are free, and can be played multiple times. Worth it.

Blogilates

While it may seem girly, these pop-fueled Pilates-fusion workouts are not for the faint-hearted (ladies, get your boyfriends, brothers, and dads involved and watch them cry right along with you). They’ll get your legs burning (or your abs, or your shoulders, or whatever you like) and your heart rate up, all without any equipment at all! The blogilates workouts are short, and target various parts of the body, so you can make up your own combination for the perfect exercise routine.

The Blogilates channel on YouTube hosts hundreds of workouts for you to follow from your laptop or phone.

Is it all free?

Yep! Unless you want to take it up a notch and download the Blogilates app like millions of other die-hard fans around the world already have.

Park Runs

These 5km, timed runs take place all over the world, and they’re a wonderful way to get moving outdoors, in a safe and controlled environment. Google the locations closest to you, grab a bunch of friends, and make a party out of it! The great thing about these runs is that, unlike working out from an app on your phone, you’ll have HUNDREDS of other people at varying degrees of fitness, sweating and panting right along with you. And if you’re not into the sweating and panting thing, you can do it at a pleasant walking pace. It also gets you out of the house and into fresh air, which is good for the body and the mind.

Where can I find it?

Park Runs happen at 223 locations around the world, and these can be found on their website: https://www.parkrun.co.za/

Is it all free?

Famously, “free for everyone, forever”.

My Fitness Pal

This smartphone app allows you to track your weight, calories, and workouts. It’s a great way to keep yourself in check, and its library of foods is so comprehensive that you won’t have to worry about doing too much math to work out how many calories you’ve eaten. If your friends are tracking their weight too, you can support one another’s weight loss milestones on the app. It’s also a great app for checking the progress you’ve made over long periods of time.

Is it all free?

This app does have a lot of features which are only available to paying members, but for calorie counting or to track how much water you’re drinking, you’ll get by just fine using the free features.
