On Wednesday, Airbnb announced that they will be cancelling reservations in Washington DC next week, with President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration set to take place on 20 January.

The online accommodation  bookings platform has taken the decision “in response to various local, state and federal officials asking people not to travel to Washington, D.C.”, while citing “reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration,” in a statement reported by Al Jazeera.

All guests whose bookings have been cancelled will receive full refunds “at Airbnb’s expense.”

Airbnb also learned about “numerous individuals” with links to known hate groups or who were involved in last week’s violent siege of the US Capitol building and has banned them from the company’s platform.

“We are continuing our work to ensure hate group members are not part of the Airbnb community,” the Airbnb statement continued.

Airbnb joins a growing list of businesses that are severing ties with Donald Trump and also announced on Monday that they will not make political donations to the Republicans who voted against certifying the results of the election last week.

Today, House Representatives are debating a second Trump impeachment, which could result in him being barred from holding federal office again.
