The US COVID-19 fatalities jumped by a record 1,939 deaths on Tuesday, while the total number of cases is now just below 400,000.
When US Surgeon General Jerome Adams said that America would be facing a Pearl Harbor, 9/11-esque historical event, he hasn’t been too far off, after Johns Hopkins reported 1,939 deaths on Tuesday, a daily record for the virus so far. In comparison, 2,977 people lost their lives on 9/11 and 2,403 people lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor 78 years ago. This takes the US’ death toll to 12,907 and counting, catching up to Spain (14,045) and Italy (17,127). However, the European countries are both begining to see their infections decrease while the US’ figures are skyrocketing at an alarming rate.
President Donald Trump has defended his response to the crisis by saying that the WHO’s recommendations against closing international air travel routes in the earliest days of the virus was “such a faulty recommendation.”
“They called it wrong. They really missed the call. They could have called it months earlier,” he said, according to CNA.
Trump also said that he intends to restart all economic activity because he believes that the country is at the “top of the curve.”
“We want to get it open soon, that’s why I think maybe we’re getting to the very top of the curve,” Trump said, according to Reuters.
Elsewhere, Wuhan, the city in China where the virus originated, ended it’s 11-week lockdown yesterday in good news for the rest of the world.
Globally, there are more than 1,43 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, more than 82,000 deaths and over 301,000 recoveries.
