Britain (Finally) Leaves EU

After three years of drama on the political stage, Britain will become the first country to leave the EU at 23:00 GMT, 31 January 2020.

Today, according to this article by Al Jazeera, Britain will enter a transition period scheduled to end in December 2020 and officially bring its 47-year membership to the European Union to an end.

The article continues that this will by no means bring an end to the Brexit drama. The UK is left with only 11 months to negotiate a deal with which all remaining 27 EU states will agree. Furthermore, the government is urging UK and EU citizens to start making the necessary preparations for 2021.

According to the Financial Times, Brexit party leader Nigel Farage expressed hopes that Britains move to leave will mark the beginning of the end for the EU, calling it an “anti-democratic” project.

“We love Europe,” he said. “We just hate the European Union”.

Though it is not the end of the Brexit saga, for Farage and half of the nation, this is a day of celebration. 52% voted to leave the EU in June 2016.

FT reports that several British parliamentarians who had been for remaining in the EU broke down in tears during their remarks about the occasion. For them and the rest of the 48% who voted to remain it is a “day of mourning”.

According to the BBC Big Ben will not chime at 23:00 due to ongoing renovation works, and a new commemorative 50p coin will come into circulation to mark the nations official withdrawal.
